After graduating from Yorktown High School in Arlington, Virginia, I packed up my dreams and spent more than 4 years earning my degree in Art Education and Photography from VCU. My freshman roommate is still a creative inspiration and loyal friend! Graduate coursework while I lived in Philly included some excellent classes at the University of the Arts. After submitting a lot of paperwork, now, I’m a level II-certified K-12 teacher in Pennsylvania and Virginia.

My Experience as a K-12 Educator in Art & Photography

Since I graduated with a B.F.A. in Art Education from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia, my work has centered around children, art, and photography — whether its elementary school, middle school, high school, or summer camp! Here’s a snapshot of my work for each age group.

HIGH SCHOOL AND MIDDLE SCHOOL

Norristown High School, Art Teacher (Grades 9-12) Norristown Area School District, Norristown, PA

  • Instructed ~ Survey of Art History ~ Creative Designs ~ Photography 1
  • Established a positive behavior management and individual participation evaluation plan.
  • Created lessons that show the relationship between various cultures and everyday life to engage and motivate students of diverse populations.
  • Related traditional darkroom and camera techniques to digital photography using Photoshop.

Art Teacher and Photography Teacher (Grades 8-12), Central Bucks Middle School and High School, Central Bucks School District, Doylestown, PA

Photography Teacher and Yearbook Advisor (Grades 10-12), Central Bucks High School

  • Developed and refined an innovative, sequential 9 week photography curriculum to teach the principles of exposing, developing, and printing 35-mm black and white film.
  • Created lessons emphasizing specific skills using the functions of the camera, elements of art, fundamentals of good photography, and the history of photography.
  • Created and designed the Central Bucks West 2008 yearbook, which became the model for future yearbooks. Managed student yearbook committee during and after school.

Art Teacher (Grade 7), Mastery Charter School, Shoemaker Campus, Philadelphia                                                                      

  • Instructed five sections of visual art with a concentration on a variety of African cultures, emphasizing unique, stylized designs and cultural patterns to create masks and illuminated letters.
  • Modified instruction to accommodate different learning styles.

Art and Photography Teacher (Grades 9-12), Gaithersburg High School, Montgomery County, Maryland

  • Instructed ~ Photography 1 ~ Advanced Photography ~ Art 1
  • Created a comprehensive 18 week curriculum to teach students the concepts of black and white photography and darkroom techniques.
  • Developed units for exposing and developing film. Photography lessons were based around individual functions of the camera, and printing modern and contemporary darkroom techniques.
  • Purchased supplies and managed financial accounts for photography classes.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Art Teacher (Grades K-5), Schuylkill Elementary School, Phoenixville Area School District, Phoenixville, PA

  •  Developed multicultural art units with the school’s theme, “Discover the World with Books.”
  • Collaborated with different grade level teachers to create interdisciplinary art lessons.
  • Created imaginative, developmentally appropriate art lessons according to the district curriculum and Pennsylvania state and national standards.
  • Adapted lessons for a variety of academic levels and special needs students in an inclusive classroom.

KINDERGARTEN, PRE-K, AND VOLUNTEERING
